Health insurance in Senegal: CMU, IPM and private cover
How Universal Health Coverage, mandatory salaried coverage and private top-ups fit together.
Three layers of coverage
The system combines state-led Universal Health Coverage (CMU) through health mutuals, mandatory health coverage for salaried workers, and supplementary private health insurance offered by licensed companies.
CMU: who it targets
The CMU targets in particular the informal sector and rural populations, through health mutuals whose contributions are partially or fully subsidised, to broaden access to care.
Do you need private top-up cover?
Private health insurance is not mandatory: it is supplementary. It can cover what base schemes do not (caps, specific benefits). Compare licensed companies in our directory.
